White Denim + Stripes: A weekend in Bologna

A couple of weeks ago now I hopped on a train to visit my lovely friends who are studying in Bologna. Bologna is actually where I wanted to go for my year abroad placement so slight jealous vibes there but it was nice to get to see it as a city I wanted to visit rather than somewhere I had to drag myself to uni to every single day.

So this post is more of an outfit post if anything, with some photos of the scenery in Bologna thrown in too. To me, Bologna seemed very typical Italy, if that makes any sense at all - very old, teaming with tourists and terracotta buildings. We went on two nights out which nearly killed me off, including one to a gay club in a castle which was such a good night out. I did try and get Jack to take me on a tour of the city but we were both hungover and ended up just dragging ourselves round to the 'must see' sights which Jack has obviously seen a million times before. It was such a nice weekend because I got to see my other friends from Manchester who are also studying in Bologna, the sun was shining and I drank enough alcohol to put me off ever touching a bottle of wine again!

I had been looking for a white denim pinafore for a while, so when this one cropped up at 50% off at the same time as I found a £10 ASOS A list voucher lurking on my account, I had to have it. I bought a size 10 to be on the safe side, but could've definitely done with an 8 as it is very baggy around my waist, but I think it works as more of an A-line style than the typical waist-cinching cut of most pinafores. It is by Monki and the denim is very light so is perfect for summer, and it has a frayed edge which makes it really relaxed and easy to wear. I have worn mine with striped tops, simple thin knits and light weight jumpers as it is really versatile and because it is white, it is a bit different from your normal denim blue or black pinafore dresses.

Wearing white is always a bit of a 'luxury' for me; growing up I was never trusted to wear white because, as with most children, it would end up stained and ruined within one wear, so even now I am really careful when I wear anything white. I remember a few summers ago when I visited an ex-boyfriend's family in France, I was wearing my favourite white cigarette/suit trousers from Topshop whilst drinking red wine and was constantly on edge that a disaster was just waiting to happen. This dress didn't look its best after wearing it on a night out, I must admit, but after washing it it seems to be absolutely fine! Just a note, however; it does crease incredibly easily due to how thin the denim is.

I paired mine with this light blue striped top from Topshop Boutique - it is about two years old now, but striped t-shirts are easy to find anywhere at any time of the year. I wouldn't say the quality is any better for it being Boutique rather than the normal line, but I don't think it cost any more than a standard Topshop t-shirt anyway. I have worn this top with a multitude of things, including white cigarette trousers, jeans, suede skirts and under dresses; I really think you cannot go wrong with a good striped t shirt. One thing I will say is that the neckline on this does seem to go quite slack as you wear it throughout the day, and it definitely looks better with the sleeved rolled up a touch.

Finally I teamed this outfit with my rose gold Nike Cortez trainers - these trainers are really good for anyone who wants a pair of comfortable shoes but isn't huge on the trainer trend. I never used to wear trainers and even now, my trainers of choice are usually more on the girly side and I love how the shape of this style really compliments and elongates your legs. They are the classic Forrest Gump trainer and I am very tempted to buy them in another colour way - most probably the typical red and blue design as I have seen a few girls wearing them with culottes, wide leg cropped jeans and skirts and think they're a good summer option.

This outfit got quite a lot of compliments as it is so simple but so typically summer, and the colours all really compliment and enhance your tan (my fake tan, I'm super pasty right now).
