Stabilo Boss Highlighter Eyes

36 - Orange, 14 - Pink, 19 - Yellow
Makeup is something I have always held a fascination for. I distinctly remember my mum giving me a toy makeup set and her having to throw it away as I had mixed all the colours together and painted it on my face. I also remember my first friend at school telling me she was going to tell the teachers I was wearing sparkly lipgloss to school, and that it was in fact hiding in one of those Chinese-silk-esque design lipstick holders everyone had when they were younger. I love how you can experiment so much with it, and how many beautiful looks you can create. Nowadays, there are so many talented young - and older - people pushing the boundaries of makeup, that we can really appreciate it as a form of art as well as a way to cover a severely nasty spot (a view not shared by my old headteacher, who banned us from wearing even the smallest trace of concealer).

With that said, I was recently inspired by the amazing fashion blogger Megan Ellaby to give orange eyeshadow a whirl. I have always loved bright eyeshadows, and own a huge amount of Urban Decay palettes which seem to end up in my sister's makeup draw SOMEHOW, but they're always the ones intact whilst the muted nudes are worn down to their metal base. I prefer the bold colours, but they do require some attention when applying to make them more wearable; for me, anyway - some people rock them every day and look amazing, but I definitely prefer a more subtle eye if I'm not going anywhere particularly special. However, Megan made the look very wearable, despite the loud colours, so when I popped into Kiko Milano after university and saw these eyeshadows were on sale, I thought 'why not!'. Yes, they're as bright as a Stabilo Boss highlighting pen, but my favourite has always been the bright pink or yellow ones anyway, so why not take inspiration from overpriced stationary?!

Kiko Milano eyeshadows are surprisingly good for how much they cost; I have around seven of them now, in an array of different shades, but I am very gutted to say that my favourite dusky pink smashed in my bag and doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere! They are definitely best when applied on top of a primer or concealer, and can be used either wet or dry depending on the colour pay off you want. I prefer to use them dry as they are easier to blend, and apply them wet near the corners of my eyes for an extra pop. They retail in Italy for around €4/5 depending on whether they are in the sale, but they have smaller ones like my hot pink one which are only €2.50!

I actually bought the yellow a couple of months ago now, so the new additions are the pink and orange/coral shades. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the colours are to wear; I blended a dark brown into my crease and then brought a small bit of yellow up towards my brow bone to make it less block-clown-makeup and used my new favourite Kat Von D Tattoo Liner to really set it off. Even my boyfriend liked it, and he would definitely have tried to convince my not to buy those particular colours if he had been with me at the time!

I think this colour palette would suit all eye colours and skin tones - especially women of colour, who look amazing in this bright shades. I am definitely going to be experimenting more with my colours and as soon as I am home, I am stealing those Urban Decay palettes back from my sister and getting the use out of them that they deserve.

  1. I only have a couple kiko eye shadows and I really like them. Im quite similar in the whole eye makeup area. I absolutely love the bold looks some of the makeup artists/bloggers create but I am always too shy to try them for myself. You have done an amazing job in pulling off bold colours, I love how you have made the bright colour so wearable. Maybe I should give it a try haha! -xo
